Geelong Maritime Museum

Model Boat Collection

The Geelong Naval and Maritime Museum holds a significant collection of model boats, including a recently acquired model of the Edina. The GMM collection is partly owned by Geelong City Council, the collection holds items of local, state and national significance. The collection tells important maritime stories, including from the development of the port of Geelong to the development of maritime technology from the mid-19th century, the museum fills a role in educating and giving a sense of pride to the people of Geelong and those visiting the city from abroad.

Geelong Gaol

Knife

Contraband knife made from tape and a razor. It was used as a form of protection against prisoners in the gaol. Seized from an inmate of the Geelong Gaol around 1986, which was the oldest inhabited prison within Victoria. This is part of a unique collection of contraband items that memorialise the hardships of gaol.

National Wool Museum

Dressage Quilt

‘Dressage Quilt’ was made by Jan Ross-Manley for the Running Stitch exhibition Wool Quilts Old and New in 1985. The quilt is made from the sashes of winning female participates of Equestrian Sports in Victoria. The central diamond is divided into quarters, one for each woman who won the ribbons. The quilt is about dedication, strength, exertion and achievement.

This rope board is part of the Geelong Maritime Museum collection, a portion of which is owned by the City. Geelong has a rich maritime and cordage industry history. The Geelong Maritime Museum holds items of local, state and national significance.

East Geelong War Memorial

The East Geelong War Memorial was erected in 1921 to commemorate the servicemen from the East Geelong, St Albans and Moolap districts who lost their lives in action in World War I. It bears forty-five names of soldiers who died in conflict.
